More than 100 women have lived in our houses since our foundation. They have ranged in age from 60 to 105. All have enjoyed the sense of community valued the peace and tranquillity of the estates and gardens – each making her new home her own.
Here are some of the things our residents have said and written about living here.
"The Home of Devenish, for me, is a place of peace, security and support. A haven, and a wonderful place to live." - Mary, our oldest resident.
"It's independent living, but so well cared for. If something goes wrong, I don't have to worry about it." - Patricia.
Patricia has been a resident here for the last 29 years. She's originally from Australia and met her husband while they were both stationed abroad.
"I feel very settled here. It feels safe and secure." - Caroline.
Caroline's previous home was a bungalow in the countryside: "It was lovely, but it was very isolated. The doctor's surgery was two miles away and I didn't have any close neighbours. Here, we do look out for each other, and, if, for example, there's a plumbing problem, Alex sorts it." Caroline is a keen artist and gardener. "Not having to worry about paying rent means I can afford to spend on my hobbies. It's nice to be able to buy plants and art materials."
"We look after each other on the patch and there is something for all interests in Weymouth. So our children don't need to worry about us! We can't believe our luck!" - Eleanor.
Eleanor joined Coastwatch when she arrived, helps with Sailability and attends upholstery classes. Eleanor also has an allotment and takes part in a local exercise class.
